Every year, on the fifth of June, people from all over the world celebrate World Environment Day (WED). This global initiative aims to promote environmental awareness and increase environmental protection across the planet. Since it began in 1972, WED has grown in popularity and has inspired initiatives including Earth Day, which takes place every April 22nd in the United States and Canada, and Earth Hour, which occurs on March 31st each year.
1) Recycle
;While it’s a great start to recycle, there are plenty of other things you can do on World Environment Day in 2021 to help preserve our environment. You could donate money or volunteer your time; try eating at a local farmer’s market instead of going to a grocery store for produce; go paperless when possible by bringing along electronic copies of your documents rather than printing them off—and so much more! It’s important that we all become conscious consumers, but starting small and changing one habit at a time is an excellent way to get started. Whatever you decide to do on World Environment Day, think about what kind of impact your actions might have in one year. And then make sure you do something else!
2) Reduce.
Many of us are guilty of unconsciously overusing plastics. Cut back on using packaging and plastic wrap, and replace with alternatives such as wax paper or beeswax wraps. Reduce your overall consumption of plastic by opting for reusable products over single-use ones whenever possible (water bottles, coffee mugs, etc.). If you absolutely can’t give up a favorite product in its original packaging, look into other recycling options. In many places around the world, plastic is recyclable right along with paper and metal! By doing just a few simple things like these every day for World Environment Day 2021, you’ll go far toward helping to keep our planet clean.
3) Reuse.
Did you know that every time a single-use plastic bag is used, it takes 1,000 years to degrade? And did you know that 6.4 billion metric tons of waste was generated in 2015 alone? Consider using reusable shopping bags as a way to cut down on pollution and add longevity to each item you own. Just by using fewer disposable bags each year, you can reduce your carbon footprint significantly. As an added bonus, plastic shopping bags tend to cost more than reusable alternatives! If a single-use bag costs $0.10 in your area, consider purchasing a set of reusable grocery totes for just $5. A little extra money up front could mean significant savings over time—and help protect Mother Earth for many generations to come!
